DESTECTIC at the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape (SAPL) invites applications for a PhD student position in Computational Design. DESTECTIC is a laboratory that integrates classical and contemporary design technology and tactics, encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), generative systems/algorithms, and data science. This position is suited for candidates interested in the integration of design and advanced technology, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and computational methods.
The program offers a range of research topics, including but not limited to:
• Design Methods and Artificial Intelligence (AI) • Design Automation • Data and Generative Systems in Design • Classical/Contemporary AI in Design • Data-driven Urban Space/Form Analysis • AR/XR in Design • Design Interaction through Data • Creative Use of AI in Design • Computational Design Pedagogy

Preferred qualifications and skills:
• M.Arch / M.Des / B.Arch degree • Intermediate Grasshopper or other algorithmic modeling experience • Enthusiasm for learning computation skills • Programming or coding experience is not required
Interested candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in computational design and possess a
strong academic background relevant to the field. Admitted candidates are expected to start on campus in the 2024 fall semester.
